Packaging

Packaging orders pack finished goods into customer-ready packaging — pallets, cartons, gift boxes, bulk crates — and deduct the packaging materials consumed from stock. They also capture the package weight and dimensions the delivery order needs for carrier booking and the e-way bill.

Packaging order

Worked scenario — palletising the 1,976 passed drums

The drums that passed QC are ready to ship. The 50 L HDPE Drum is bulky, so the packaging method is Bulk: drums are stacked and stretch-wrapped onto pallets, 40 drums per pallet.

Create a packaging order

Go to Operations → Packaging → + New Packaging Order and set:

  1. Sales Order — SO-1290, the order being packaged.
  2. Packaging Method — Standard, Custom, Gift, or Bulk (configurable per tenant).
  3. Materials Consumed — each packaging material used and its quantity (below).
  4. Output — number of packages, total weight, and dimensions.

Materials consumed

Packaging materials are ordinary inventory items (product type Packaging Material), so consuming them updates their stock exactly like any other issue:

MaterialQtyRateCost
Wooden pallet50₹220₹11,000
Stretch wrap (roll)12₹450₹5,400
Corner board (set)50₹18₹900
Shipping label50₹4₹200
Total packaging cost₹17,500

Total weight≈ 5,900 kg (drum ≈ 2.9 kg each + pallet tare)
Dimensions1,200 × 1,000 × 1,150 mm per pallet

Packaging methods

The method decides the material list and how output is measured. Methods are configurable per tenant; the common ones:

MethodTypical useMaterialsOutput measured in
StandardRetail cartonsCarton, void fill, tape, labelCartons
CustomCustomer-specified packAs per the SO's packing specPackages
GiftHigh-value / jewelleryGift box, ribbon, insert, bagBoxes
BulkHeavy / palletised goodsPallet, stretch wrap, corner boardPallets

The 50 L drums use Bulk — the pack economics are pallet-driven, not carton-driven.

Partial and multiple packaging orders

A large order rarely packs in one go. You can raise several packaging orders against one sales order — for SO-1290 you might pack 25 pallets today and 25 tomorrow, each a separate order consuming its own share of materials. The sales order only advances to Shipped once the packed quantity covers what the delivery dispatches, so a half-packed order can't accidentally ship complete.

Status flow

Draft → In Progress → Completed
StatusWhat happens
DraftOrder is being prepared; materials listed but not yet deducted.
In ProgressPacking is under way.
CompletedPackaging materials are deducted from stock (₹17,500 across the four items) and the sales order advances toward Shipped.

:::note Packaging materials are stock, so keep reorder levels current Because pallets, stretch wrap and corner board are inventory items, completing this order drops their on-hand quantity like any other consumption — 50 pallets and 12 rolls here. Keep their reorder levels set or a big dispatch can quietly run you out of wrap mid-shift. :::

:::tip Weight & dimensions feed the delivery Recording package weight and dimensions here means the delivery order can be raised with accurate figures for carrier booking, freight costing, and the e-way bill — no re-measuring on the loading dock. :::

:::caution Packaging cost vs product cost The ₹17,500 packaging spend is a fulfilment cost, separate from the drum's ₹214 build cost — it is not rolled into the finished-good valuation. Treat it as a dispatch/selling expense, the way freight is handled, not as part of COGS per drum. :::
